Below is the text of the seminal 1935 study of the Poythress family in Virginia published in the William and Mary Quarterly. It spans the 17th, 18th and a portion of the 19th century and is an important work for Poythress and allied family genealogists and social historians. The author, William B. Hall, provides documentary evidence of family lineages and property holdings where possible and describes what remained poorly understood about the family’s history and that of closely allied families.

Note: This work is neither exhaustive nor conclusive but it does provide a bit of scaffolding for those of us still today trying to piece together the early history of the Poythress families in America. The document is provided as a reference tool for personal family history research.
