Early Poythress Family in Virginia, Lou Poole

 October 13, 2013

The Poythress family is thought to be connected to the Wall family [Chapter 11] by the marriage of Ann Poythress to John Wall about 1730-1740 in Virginia. The Wall family is connected to the Covington family through the marriage of Nancy Wall to John Covington [See discussion of this confusing “fact” in the Covington family history, Chapter 10] on 26 July 1770. as his second wife. The Covington family is then connected to the Gathings family through the marriage of Martha Wall Covington to James J. Gathings on 5 April 1838. Their daughters, Mattie (Martha Wall Texanna) and Emma Davis Gathings, both married James McCown. NOTE TO THE READER: Just as we have a problem in identifying our precise Wall ancestor, we will now add to this problem by stating that, so far, I have not been able to find a single reference to a Wall-Poythress marriage! Yet we know…

Cemeteries of Screven County, Georgia Area

Cemeteries of Screven County, Georgia Area Note:  Published to this website on August 26, 2001 By Maynard Poythress. Generally I interpret the Screven County Area to be Screven, Effingham, Jenkins, Burke, Bulloch and even Chatham Counties.  I don’t claim to have them all and if I miss one by all means send it to me.  The source for these are in part personal readings and rubbings. In recent years, Bud Poythress and I have picked up a few redbugs and even a tick or two in this heroic effort.  Also used were county records of sexton’s lists available in the Georgia Archives.  In a number of instances, Bud and I have photos of tombstones if you wish to inquire about a specific one. I was surprised to note that the list has so few individuals buried earlier than the mid to even late 1800’s.  It then dawned on me that…

Court Orders 1714 – 1720 Transcription Note: (Revision 6 Apr 2001, J.M. Poythress) This unindexed reel was scanned Mar, ’01.  Entries are stated by Court Order Book page number omitting dates as the date most often prefaces the text of that particular court meeting. Entries in parenthesis are abstracted; entries not in parentheses are transcriptions. Typically, when a Poythress appears pertinent to a proceeding itself the entry is transcribed; a proceeding with a Poythress as an indirect participant I have most often elected to abstract the entry.  Generally, “court orders” will be brief and to the point, containing few if any details of the court considerations leading to the order.  Most are transcribed because there is so little it is easier to transcribe than to abstract. Details of cases are typically missing.  Court orders were not intended to detail the proceedings of a case, only its conclusion. Given the need…

Prince George VA Minute Book 1737 – 1740

 July 25, 2017

Transcriber Notes:  (Revision 5 Apr 2001)  The lead part of the microfilm reel notes that pages 1-86 are missing.  Second, in the matter of dating entries, the specific date is seldom given in the case text and is rarely of consequence.  The dates for each entry are shown as the month of the particular Prince George court, typically the second Tuesday in each month.  Additionally, there are some inconsistencies in the yearly dates occasioned by the “start” of a new year beginning in March until the calendar was later adjusted.  For this reason, the minutes entries transcribed in this document are in the sequence of the page numbers assigned by the court clerk.  Third, a glossary of legal terms used is at the end of this post. Note that in these documents Poythress has begun to be spelled with double “s”. At the conclusion of this document, an imperfect legal…
