Gen. note John Taylor supposedly built the mill between 1675-1690 and also owned Flower de Hundred plantation. James Cooke owned Bonaccord estate and operated the mill during the Civil War, when it received much damage. John Cole kept the mill running after the war, and it stayed operational until 1920.

Gen. note Governor Yeardley first made this his home in 1619. It was named after his wife’s family name, Flowerdew. He built the first windmill in America (1621) here, and was the first to plant tobacco. It was also here that the first slaves were thought to have landed in 1619. The Indian village of Weyanoke occcupied part of the plantation.
Gen. note William Peachy was a Colonel in the 5th Virginia Regiment during the Revolution. Grant’s army crossed the James here during the Civil War.

Gen. note Named after Gov. Yeardley’s wife’s family, Flowerdew, the plantation was first outlined by a charter of 1608 and included the Weyanoke Indian village. The Poythress house was thought to have been built on a bluff overlooking the James River, a brick structure since destroyed by fire.
