Biographic Compilations by Mike Tutor © 2022
About This Project
The purpose of this chart and the linked biographic profiles for men believed to be direct descendants of Francis Poythress is to aggregate what we know, and sometimes what we have compelling reasons to suspect, and place it with the appropriate Poythress male family member as a foundation from which to work. It is intended as a guide for deeper study and ongoing refinement of family history.
From this foundation, anyone can analyze and deduce further information that will lead to future discoveries. Sometimes when one is knee-deep in research, it is hard to see the forest due to all of the trees around one. Fresh eyes sometime see the obvious that has been overlooked.
The chart link is immediately below. Note that on many browsers it will be possible to open a navigation block on the bottom of the chart simply by clicking on the opening page rather than a specific individual — this feature allows movement through the sub-chart pages without following specific lines of descent.
Poythress Biographic Profiles Chart
About the Biographic Compilations and Chart Design
“The First Generations Chart” was built with links to members of the Poythress family for whom we have a developed biographic profile. The link opens that person’s profile for review. When moving forward across generations new chart pages will follow color-coded branches of known male lines of descent. The biographical profiles have sub-headings that may include comments made by Mr. Robert Bolling Batte, Dr. Claiborne T. Smith, me (Mike Tutor) or others, family descriptions, land holdings, adjoining properties, civic activities, census records, court appearances, wills and highlights of an individual’s life. It may also show a number of deeds of those living in the same area, many of whom are relations.
Many of those on the chart were not identified on previous charts as particular documents had not been available or no chart had been produced for further generations. Dates below the individuals on the chart correspond to his/her life span. These dates can be relied upon so far as the time frame we know they existed or are approximations based upon existing records. Dates will be refined or corrected as new information becomes available.
Scope Limitation
At present, it is beyond the scope of this project to identify the marriages of the daughters.
Acknowledgments
“The “Poythress Biographic Profiles” are the result of many researchers and thousands of hours of tedious and meticulous research. Maynard Poythress, Barbara Poythress Neal, Julie Cabitto, Lou Poole, Lyn Baird, Albert Tims and many others have led the way in this research. Their decades of contributions are found in the archives of posts to the Poythress message board and throughout the pages of this research site. They have made Poythress research much more pleasant than it would be if each person had to gather information on their own. My deeply appreciated thanks to one and all. Thank you.
I posted my first message to the Poythress list back on January 26th, 1999 asking if someone could point me to the Bolling Batte chart of Early Poythress Families in Virginia. This project is the result of my decades long effort to build on the foundations first laid by Mr. R. Bolling Batte and the seminal work of Mr. William B. Hall.
Aspirations
I hope this effort provides guided entry and focus for ongoing study and new Poythress family history research. I especially hope that I accurately represent the work and analysis of the researchers mentioned above. There is an enormous amount of misinformation on the internet. New family researchers are seeing information that does not reflect existent records. When looking for information on one’s family, records/documents are the primary source and most of the information in the profiles reflect this. There are comments within the profiles that reflect my input or others on the particular subject. With your help these compilations will continue to evolve.
I hope that all who visit the Poythress.org website will develop new insights leading to new discoveries.
