Family Lineage Quest For Dr. John Poythress of Beaufort, NC

 August 21, 2024

I am posting a note sent to me a couple months back that was part of an exchange of information with Mike Tutor related to some of the longstanding Poythress orphans, so to speak.   Mike assembled a biographic compilation and trial charge proposing a family lineage for Dr. John Poythress (see below). And we have had various efforts to assemble records and accounts related to his life and profession. And Mike also gives us a biographic compilation for William Poythress — suggesting Dr. John Poythress may have been the half-brother of William Poythress  of Bertie County, NC (m. Ann Lewis). The note Mike sent adds more context that could open new research questions about the relationship between the Irby family with several generations of physicians and the Poythress. Here are the threads Mike started to weave together for us… March 13, 1739, in Prince George Co., on the complaints of…

Willam Byrd Diary Mentions of Peter Poythress.

 October 29, 2022

Diaries of William Byrd II of Westover William Byrd II (1674-1744) was master of Westover Plantation, on the north side of the James River and about a mile upstream of Flowerdew Hundred Plantation which is on the south side of the River.  Westover is operative today at 7000 Westover Road, Charles City, VA 23030, phone 804-829-2882. Westover is one of the more elegant of colonial plantations.  It was built about 1730.  Its builder, William Byrd, is widely credited to be the founder of both Petersburg and Richmond.  The home is highly regarded as architecture, notably for the early-18th century gates.  The lawn overlooks the James River. Mr. Byrd was an obsessive diarist, chronicling the most minor events in his life almost daily.  Byrd wrote his diaries in code so he was not particularly writing for an audience and thereby gains a measure of credibility.  The code was his own and…

Rediscovering Christanna By John Kincheloe

 March 27, 2021

Date: Sat, 4 Jan 2020 10:57:30 -0500 From: Lyn Baird lyn.baird@gmail.com Subject: Rediscovering Christanna John Kincheloe Happy New Year. I recommend Rediscovering Christanna: Native Worlds and Governor Spotswood’s Fort by John Kincheloe, available at Amazon and elsewhere. Many of you will have some familiarity with Fort Christanna in Brunswick County, Virginia. This book provides fresh insights into that history and aftermath, especially from the perspective of Indian peoples involved. The narrative is lively and interesting, while reflecting scholarly care and restraint, with rich footnotes and bibliography. Truth in advertising — not one Poythress is mentioned. But anyone interested in contextual understanding of Southside Virginia and bordering North Carolina in the early eighteenth century should find it to be a worthwhile and delightful read. –Lyn Poythress Baird

George Carrington Mason. The William and Mary Quarterly. Vol. 23, No. 3 (Jul., 1943), pp. 249-271 This detailed history mentions Lt. Francis Poythress, John Poythress and William Poythress in different contexts. It also mentions Rev. Devereux Jarratt, rector of Bath Parish who reportedly mentored Rev. Francis Poythress. This article will prove very helpful for anyone interested in developing a better understanding of the early colonial period and the evolution of geographic boundaries we see referenced in land records, wills and other historical documents. Notable Mailing List Post: J D Poythress descendant of J A Poythress & Martha in Caddo, LA 1860

 September 7, 2017

Barbara Neal Posted to Poythress Mailing List on September 6th, 2017 Linda Clark Smith & Marianne & I have all 3 at times worked on trying to definitively connect back J A Poythress, who I think we initially saw in the 1860 Census of Caddo Parish, LA with an intriguing Poythress relative in the household, John M Poythress, 26-yr old carpenter born in FL. While this email doesn’t connect either JA or John M further back, it does give us more info on J A Poythress’ family and descendants. Al’s posting about a John D Poythress applying in 1940 for a US Patent for air conditioning, had “Dallas Texas” in the see-it-here link. The Dallas TX & John D Poythress rang a bell for me, prompting me to look back in my stuff for a Dallas, TX Poythress. John D Poythress was son of John Henry Poythress.  And John Henry…
