James R. Poythress (c. 1785 – aft. 1850), possible son of William Poythress (c. 1762 -), 6th generation.
Compiler’s Note: James “Jim” Poythress (c. 1785-aft. 1850) began a line of Northampton Co., NC, families. He lived in the same area of North Carolina as his possible parents lived, William (1762-) and Ann Poythress, who married in 1785, in Bertie County, NC. William’s parents were William (1720-1782) and Sarah Poythress, who moved from Virginia to Bertie County, NC, by 1753. In 1768, William Poythress (1720-1782) gave a deed of gift of goods to Richard and Rachel Outlaw in Northampton Co., NC. William Poythress (1762-) would have been born in North Carolina and so would his possible son, James Poythress. James Poythress was born around the time of William and Ann Poythress marriage. William Poythress (1720-1785) appears to be the progenitor of the Northampton County, North Carolina, families.
James and John Poythress were listed two households apart in the 1830 census. They may have been brothers. The 1830 census reveals that James and John were in the 40 to 49 year old range with their births in the range of 1781- 1790. Both had wives. James’ wife appears to have been born between 1800 and 1810 and John’s wife appears to have been born between 1780 and 1790. James had one older female and two younger children, a male and a female, in his household. John appears to have had two young females in his household. In the 1850 census, James Poythress was 65 years old indicating his birth about 1785.
Sarah “Sally” Crout (Crowder) (c. 1800-bef. 1850) & James “Jim” R. Portis [Poythress] married 1/13/1827 in Northampton County, North Carolina, with Bondsman, Thomas R. Hutson, witness, Sam L. Calvert and minister, John Jones, MG (Minister of the Gospel). James Poythress and Sarah Crowder had children: Sterling Poythress, William Poythress, James Poythress, Lovel Poythress, Joseph Poythress, and Richard Plunk Poythress. Several of these sons married Turner women.

Greensville County was established in 1781 from Brunswick County. Emporia, Virginia, is the county seat. Emporia was used quite often for official records by the Northampton Co., NC, Poythress families. The adjacent counties are Brunswick (west), Dinwiddie (north), Sussex (northeast), Southampton (east), all in Virginia, and Northampton (south) in North Carolina. Virginia did not escape the national and worldwide epidemics of cholera in 1848 and 1865. Cholera is an infection of the small intestine transmitted primarily through drinking water or food. William and all of his children except the youngest child, Martha, disappeared between the 1860 and 1870 census. Other than Martha, only Williams’ wife, Julia, and his mother-in-law, Martha Brewer, appeared in the 1870 census. Their son, Joseph H. Poythress, did live until 1927 even though he did not appear in the 1870 census as a 17 year old. It may be that some of the children were raised by others due to economic conditions.
